Elephants do not live in one big herd. Adult males range on their own, or in small batchelor groups. While females and the young roam in tightly knit family groups of up to eleven animals.
Despite living separately, these groups are in constant communication. They track each others movements by scent, which creates an issue for the relocation.
If they move the males first, the bulls will not be able to smell the family groups in their new home, and they could stampede.
So the team has to move family groups first, but keeping them all together is a challenge.
