About Duncan
Whatever the project, my goal is always to make memorable, entertaining and thought-provoking films.
Recently, I have investigated how science is revealing what it feels like to die. Masterminded the dissection of a T.rex. Worked with Stephen Hawking on the future of our species. Sifted the fact from the fiction about cannabis; explored what would happen if you fell into a Black Hole; and tried to make an entire nation happier.
Equally at home directing crew or self shooting, I have a proven track record in high end factual programming for the likes of Channel 4, National Geographic, PBS, Five and Discovery.
These have been across a diverse range of styles and genres, from an obs doc about the people trying to maintain centuries of tradition on the River Thames to historical reconstructions depicting Britain's most infamous female prison - Holloway. I have solved an enduring mystery of the Second World War; and explored the natural history of elephants, in a race against time to save an entire herd of 80 animals.
I have extensive experience working with CGI, devising and setting series styles and formats, producing live television and nurturing on screen talent.
My previous life as a research scientist has contributed to my approach to making TV. I am never afraid to fill my programmes with content, using intimate human stories and experiences to unpack it in a forensic, yet accessible way. I concentrate on moments of humour, humanity and insight, which bring the complicated and complex to life in an engaging and lucid manner.
Why did a bottle of vodka change our understanding of life? How do you make a Black Hole on the lab bench? Why would a team of engineers use a numbering system so complicated that cock-ups and confusion were inevitable.
If you have an upcoming project that demands a rigorous, analytical, yet fun approach, or you want to bring a new perspective to a supposedly well known event or subject, please feel free to contact me.
